I was digging through my swipe files today when I came across THIS particular sales letter.

I thought I’d post it here so that you can also benefit from it.

The letter given below was mailed by an independent service station to attract new customers.

In fact, this letter was so effective it succeeded in pulling away customers from some of the other, more established service stations… to this one.

If you’ve seen some of those hyped-up Internet Marketing sales letters and thought that was the only way to write a “good” sales letter, you’re going to change your opinion after reading this.

Dear Sir:

Have you ever taken your car to a dealer service station
for repairs, paid a high bill, and driven away only to find
that your car ran worse than before?

Have you ever had it suggested to you, about the time your
valves first needed grinding, that you’d better consider
‘turning in the old boat on a new one?’

Auto dealers, carrying enormous overhead, have to render
service as a necessary incident to their business, which is
the selling of cars — forced on them by the manufacturers.
It is an annoyance and a drain, the high cost of which is
passed on to you. The dealer’s eye is always on a sale, for
it is in selling that he makes his money.

Now this guy works in a software firm, and he got professional training on the concept we’re going to discuss to help him with his office work.

So at first instance you might think that the concept has nothing to offer to YOU.

You’re wrong! As was I…

You see, when my friend told me about this concept, I also thought he was talking about some software. I thought we needed technical expertise to get it to work for us.

But that just wasn’t the case.

The concept he told me about is called “Six thinking hats”. Maybe you heard about it before.

“Six thinking hats” is a concept or an approach for looking at an issue from different viewpoints. The different colored “hats” here tell us about the things we need to consider while we put on that hat.

For instance,

• White hat for data and facts
• Black hat for problems, obstacles and difficulties
• Red hat for feelings, intuitions and gut instincts
• Green hat for possibilities, alternatives and new ideas
• Yellow hat for values and benefits
• Blue hat for managing the thinking process

As soon as my friend finished explaining this process to me, I could immediately see its uses for copywriters and internet marketers…or for anyone else for that matter.

For copywriters, this would help improve the way you do your research or write your copy.

For marketers, it would help structure the way you launch products correctly.

I bet many of us are already using this approach without knowing it. But the whole idea of sorting different concerns into different “hats” makes the project so much more easier and organized.

Tell me – how many mailing lists are you on currently? How
many newsletters and emails do you get everyday?

The truth is if we start counting the total number,
we’ll probably be amazed at the result ourselves.

I’m on numerous lists too. But that doesn’t mean I read
each and every email these guys send. Most of them I delete
without even opening.

But there is one newsletter that I always eagerly open and
read.

It’s John Forde’s CopywritersRoundtable(CR) newsletter.

I assume you already know John Forde. He’s an A-list
financial copywriter.

John rolls out his CR newsletters once every 10 days or so.
In these emails he discusses copywriting, marketing,
general topics and so much more.

For starters, the first thing you’ll be taught in copywriting is to get the full payment or at least 50% of the payment before starting the project.

The remaining 50% should be obtained after submitting the first draft and before giving the client the final copy.

But remember that you should never give the client the final copy before receiving the dues.

Here are a few things you can do if the client is delaying your payment:

a) If your client is a big marketer, he’ll surely be too busy to look at your emails. So just send him an email or two and follow it up with a paypal request.

b) Some clients have 30-day and 15-day pay cycles. Make sure beforehand they don’t have anything like that in place.

c) Follow up the email with a phone call to make sure he has seen it.

d) Always send the client a locked pdf or scanned image of the first draft. Tell the client you’ll only proceed if he makes the remaining payment at that stage.

e) If the amount is on the higher end but less than $8000, you can take the assistance of the small claims court.

f) Get the agreement in print if possible, so as to avoid legal hassles later.

g) Fire the client and find a new one.

This can be dangerous because there’ll always be more freebie seekers compared to the people who will pay you for your work.

This mean they can get a lot of work done for free with the pretense of testing you out.

Hence, be careful when someone asks to write a FREE sample for him.

JV deals are good because people will have less to worry about before they hire you.

Obviously, they’ll be paying you nothing (or maybe just a small fee) up front and so are more likely to try you out. You’ll have a sample for your portfolio.

At the same time, JV deals are also bad. If a person is eager to let a newbie write his sales copy, then he must be a newbie himself.

It’s quite certain that even if you give him a great sales copy, he’ll not know how to market it. You’ll most probably never get your share of profits from the JV and might even be ripped off intentionally.

Hence, you need to think twice before you JV again.
